“I Like to Do Ones That I Wrote”: Louis Tomlinson on Choosing One Direction Songs for His Tour

Louis Tomlinson opened up about what goes into choosing One Direction songs to perform on his solo tour. The 33-year-old singer, who shot to fame as part of the globally loved band formed in 2010, shared that revisiting old tracks is both nostalgic and complicated.

Since One Direction went on hiatus, each member has carved out a distinct solo path. Yet, their shared history continues to come up in interviews and performances, showing just how much that era still resonates with both the artists and their fans.

In a recent conversation with Capital Buzz, Tomlinson discussed his connection to some of the group’s songs, including No Control, Drag Me Down, Night Changes, and Where Do Broken Hearts Go. When asked what drew him to those particular tracks, he said, “Most of them I wrote. So that’s always a starting point. I like to do ones that I wrote.” He added that while he didn’t write Where Do Broken Hearts Go, it’s “just a song he’s always liked.”

When pressed on whether there were other One Direction songs he thought could work on his setlist, Tomlinson admitted the choice isn’t easy. “To be honest, the hardest thing with picking the One Direction songs is if the lyric,” he explained. “I’m really proud of most of those One Direction songs, but some of the lyric is like quite– It can be a little juvenile.”

That sense of reflection is something Tomlinson has carried into his solo career. Known for his more grounded and mature sound, the Lemonade singer said that performing certain songs from the band’s earlier days can feel strange now. “Some of the stuff just feels weird to perform at this age,” he admitted.

However, there are songs that still hold up perfectly well for him. “Night Changes,” he noted, remains a comfortable choice because it feels “a bit more mature” than others. It’s one of the band’s most timeless tracks, and fans often regard it as a bridge between their youthful pop beginnings and their more grown-up sound.

Tomlinson’s comments highlight how artists evolve with time — not just musically, but personally. His thoughtful approach to selecting One Direction songs reflects both a deep respect for the past and a desire to stay true to where he is now as an artist.
