Jennifer Lopez’s complete absence from the new HBO Max docuseries Alex vs A-Rod has surprised many viewers, especially since the series promises to explore Alex Rodriguez’s life from every possible angle. The omission has sparked debate online, with fans wondering why such a significant chapter of Rodriguez’s personal life was left out.
The docuseries is positioned as a deep dive into Rodriguez’s journey, described as “Alex Rodriguez reflects on his journey from baseball prodigy to one of the sport’s most controversial figures.” Directors Gotham Chopra and Erik LeDrew said that “nothing was off the table,” and the episodes address several difficult topics, including his past “indiscretions,” his complicated Yankees years, and his affair with Madonna, as per Marca.
Despite this level of openness, Jennifer Lopez is never mentioned. The lack of reference stands out, considering that other important individuals from Rodriguez’s life appear in the documentary. His ex-wife Cynthia Scurtis participates and plays a central role, which aligns with their long marriage from 2002 to 2008 and their shared responsibility for two daughters.
Logically, Lopez—his partner for four years and fiancée for several of those—would also seem relevant. The two were engaged, and their wedding was postponed twice before their breakup. For many fans, their relationship marked a highly public and memorable period in Rodriguez’s life.
However, the filmmakers chose to narrow the focus of the documentary. Rather than highlighting his more recent romantic relationships, the series concentrates on the professional choices, public controversies, and personal rebuilding that shaped Rodriguez’s public identity. Within that creative direction, the relationship with Lopez may not have fit the themes the directors wanted to emphasize.
Even so, viewers continue to discuss her absence. The couple was constantly in the spotlight, and their relationship played a large role in Rodriguez’s tabloid presence. Leaving out Lopez feels, to some, like leaving out a major chapter of his story.
Reports previously shared by Page Six claimed that one factor behind their split was Rodriguez’s alleged involvement with model Madison LeCroy, along with other rumored infidelities. Lopez, who has experienced several high-profile relationships and marriages—including her brief marriage to Ojani Noa, her marriage to Cris Judd, and her engagement to Rodriguez—went on to marry Ben Affleck in 2022.
