Teen tennis star Mirra Andreeva opened up about her emotional outburst at Indian Wells after a tense third-round defeat that saw her lose control on court and vent her frustration toward the crowd.
The defending champion was eliminated in the Round of 32 at the Indian Wells Open on Monday after falling to unseeded Czech player Katerina Siniakova 4-6, 7-6 (5), 6-3 in a match that swung dramatically after the second set.
Andreeva, just 18 years old and under pressure to defend her title, struggled to contain her emotions as the match slipped away. After losing the second-set tiebreak, she threw her racket before smashing it on the court, an action that resulted in a code violation. She threw her racket again after the final point as Siniakova completed the comeback victory.
Following the handshake at the net, Andreeva stormed off the court while shouting toward the crowd. F–k you all,” she screamed repeatedly as some spectators responded with boos.
Despite the heated ending, Andreeva had shown resilience earlier in the match. She fought back from a 0-3 double-break deficit in the opening set to take it 6-4. However, the momentum shifted afterward as Siniakova, the world No.1 doubles player, frustrated the young Russian with consistent play and defensive pressure.
Statistics highlighted Andreeva’s struggles during the match. She created 26 break points but converted only seven of them, while also producing twice as many unforced errors as winners.
After the match, Andreeva addressed the incident and clarified that the outburst was not directed at any specific person.
“It was to myself, to everyone, basically,” she said. “I mean, after the loss, I just get very angry, so I say those things sometimes to myself. I mean, first to myself, of course, but then, yeah, it was just anger coming out, just a lot of emotions. Not really towards anyone.”
The Russian later expressed regret while speaking to reporters following a doubles victory alongside Victoria Mboko.
“Well, of course, I can say that there were a lot of emotions that I was going through after the loss,” Andreeva said. “But, of course, I’m not really proud of how I managed it. I’m not really proud of how I handled it in the end.
“Those are the things that really need to be worked on soon. I don’t know. Not in the future, but whenever I get the chance.”
During the tense tiebreaker, Andreeva also told her team, including coach Conchita Martinez, to leave the court as her frustration grew.
Currently ranked No. 8 in the world, Andreeva will shift her focus to doubles, where she is set to compete in the quarterfinals on Wednesday as she continues her pursuit of a title in California.
