Police fear Savannah Guthrie’s mother was kidnapped.
Police in Arizona say they believe the mother of Savannah Guthrie may have been kidnapped from her home while she was asleep, and investigators are now treating the case as a crime.
Nancy Guthrie, 84, has been missing since Sunday, February 1. According to authorities, the evidence uncovered at her home points to her being taken against her will rather than leaving on her own.
“I believe she was abducted, yes,” a spokesperson for the Pima County Sheriff’s Department told CBS News on Monday. “She didn’t walk from there. She didn’t go willingly.”
Investigators say the circumstances surrounding her disappearance are deeply concerning. “At this point, investigators believe she was taken from the home against her will, possibly in the middle of the night. Taken against her will includes possible kidnapping or abduction,” a spokesperson added.
Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos echoed that assessment, saying authorities believe Nancy Guthrie was “taken from the home against her will, possibly in the middle of the night.”
“Taken against her will includes possible kidnapping or abduction,” the spokesperson reiterated.
After processing the scene, investigators say they are confident that what happened was not accidental or voluntary. Chris told the outlet that law enforcement now believes Nancy was the victim of a crime.
“We believe now, after we’ve processed that crime scene, that we do, in fact, have a crime,” said Chris. “She is very limited in mobility. We know she didn’t just walk out there, that we know. There are other things at the scene that indicate she did not leave on her own, we know that.”
Authorities have not released details about potential suspects or how the alleged abduction may have unfolded. They continue to investigate and are asking anyone with information to come forward as the search for Nancy Guthrie continues.
