A heated and very public clash broke out between Elon Musk and comedian Jon Stewart this week, and the back and forth quickly turned into a sharp exchange of insults that caught plenty of attention online.
The fight started after Stewart aired a segment on “The Weekly Show” that focused on the social media platform X and what he believes is its influence on American democracy. During the segment, Stewart took direct aim at Musk and the narrative around undocumented voting.
He criticized the Tesla head’s focus on the issue, saying, “Musk has pushed this idea that undocumented, non-citizen voting is rampant, it is sowing the seeds of our destruction, and we cannot do it.”
Stewart then pointed out what he sees as a contradiction in Musk’s position about protecting democracy while running a platform that heavily shapes public conversation.
He said: “The irony of it all is [because of] this guy’s platform, this guy’s algorithm, which he is in charge of… he is a far more relevant actor in the warping of our democracy, through his money and his algorithm, than any measure of undocumented, non-citizen voting will ever be.”
Stewart also predicted how Musk and his supporters might defend the platform’s approach to speech and moderation.
“What his argument—and I think his people’s argument—would be, is: Now that we’re getting uncensored material, now that the First Amendment has primacy, people move to the right because they learn the truth,” Stewart said.
But he pushed back on that idea immediately.
“The truth is that algorithm incentivizes the misinformation from the right, and he designs it.”
Musk did not stay quiet for long. The billionaire responded on social media with a blunt attack on Stewart’s credibility.
“Jon Stewart is an extremely skilled propagandist disguised as a truth-teller,” he wrote.
Stewart answered with a short but pointed reply of his own, describing Musk as simply, “An extremely skilled propagandist.”
That exchange only escalated things further when Musk fired back again.
“Not as good as you! Stop being so humble,” Musk fired back late Thursday.
Despite the heated tone of the argument, Stewart later took a different approach and extended an invitation for Musk to come on his show and talk through their disagreements directly.
It would not be the first attempt. A similar offer was made in the past but never led to an appearance.
Last year, Musk indicated he would appear on Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show” if the interview aired “unedited,” though the appearance ultimately never happened. Stewart later revealed that Musk had “ghosted” him after reading a follow-up message.
