Danielle Jonas Reveals Lyme Disease Diagnosis After Doctors Mistook Symptoms for Anxiety

Danielle Jonas, wife of musician Kevin Jonas, has opened up about her struggle with Lyme disease after doctors initially dismissed her symptoms as anxiety.

In a recent interview with Parents magazine published Thursday, Danielle spoke candidly about her diagnosis, the emotional toll it took, and how it continues to affect her daily life.

“They tried to tell me it was anxiety. Finally, I had a biopsy that showed I actually had Lyme disease,” she told Parents. Lyme disease, according to the Mayo Clinic, is caused by Borrelia bacteria transmitted through the bite of an infected tick. The condition can lead to fatigue, pain, and neurological issues if not treated early.

Danielle recalled that her first symptoms were unexpected. “I also had eczema on my scalp, which was likely from the inflammation [caused by Lyme disease],” she said. “The hair loss was very traumatic. I got to a point where I wanted to wear a wig.”

To cope, she experimented with hair extensions but found they worsened her condition. “These then irritated her eczema further because of the way they pulled at her scalp,” she explained. “I had to go out and do things with Kevin. I just wanted to feel like myself,” she added.

The 37-year-old mother of two shared how her experience with chronic illness has shaped her approach to parenting. She said her daughters, Alena and Valentina, witnessed her struggle and learned from how she managed it. “They saw everything I went through, so the main thing I tell them [when their eczema flares up] is ‘this is going to pass,’” Danielle said.

Danielle and Kevin Jonas, who married in 2009, share two daughters: Alena, 11, and Valentina, 8. The couple, known for their grounded family life despite fame, often share glimpses of their parenting journey on social media and in interviews.

Lyme disease has affected many public figures in recent years, drawing more attention to the importance of early detection and awareness. Danielle’s story adds a personal dimension to the growing conversation about how easily symptoms can be overlooked or misdiagnosed, particularly in women, according to the Cleveland Clinic.

While recovery from Lyme disease can take time, Danielle said she remains focused on maintaining her health and supporting her family. Her openness, she hopes, will encourage others to seek answers and advocate for themselves when they feel unheard.
