Laura Benanti had a humbling, and hilarious, experience mid-flight after realizing she wasn’t recognized by a plane full of theater-loving teenagers.
The Tony Award-winning actress shared the moment in a candid video on TikTok, estimating that most of the passengers around her were part of a youth theater group. Despite her extensive Broadway and television career, Benanti noted that not a single one of them seemed to know who she was.
“So I would say about 83% of the people on this airplane are teenagers in a theater group,” she said in the clip. “And not a single one of them recognizes me.”
Amused, Benanti decided to break the ice herself. She approached the group and asked if they were part of a theater program. When they confirmed, she casually added, “I do theater.”
The response? A simple, indifferent: “Cool.”
Benanti leaned into the moment with humor, later jokingly declaring “RIP” at her failed attempt to impress the group.
The lighthearted interaction quickly resonated online, with fans finding the moment both relatable and funny. It also underscored a broader reality: recognition, even for award-winning performers, isn’t always guaranteed, especially across generations.
While Benanti took it in stride, the encounter offered a playful reminder that even seasoned stars can have their “nobody knows me here” moment.
