Melissa Gilbert has spoken publicly for the first time since her husband, actor Timothy Busfield, was formally charged with child sex abuse-related offenses earlier this month.
The former Little House on the Prairie star shared a lengthy statement on the social media account for her lifestyle company, Modern Prairie. The post featured a photo of Gilbert seated on a couch, holding a cup of coffee and looking away from the camera, paired with a message focused on gratitude, reflection, and the emotional weight of recent weeks.
“I’m sending you all my love and gratitude during this extraordinarily difficult time. Not only for Tim, me and our family, but in the collective heaviness so many of us seem to be carrying right now. Add an unexpected storm to the mix, and it can all feel like a bit too much,” she wrote.

Gilbert continued by reflecting on the need to slow down and reset amid personal and broader challenges. “This season has reminded me, very clearly, how important it is to slow down, prioritize what truly matters, and allow ourselves moments of rest,” the actress said.
“Stepping back from the noise, the news, and even our daily responsibilities from time to time gives us space to recharge, reflect, and find our center again.” She also expressed appreciation to those who have reached out with support since the news became public.
Gilbert thanked followers for the “love, patience, and support you continue to show Tim and me. Thank you for helping me to feel safer, more grounded, and deeply held by this extraordinary community of women here at Modern Prairie.”
Her statement concluded with a message about cautiously returning to her work and online presence. “I’ll be easing back into things thoughtfully and with care – moving forward one step at a time. More to come, and so much gratitude always,” she wrote.
Gilbert’s post follows a period of silence on her part. She deactivated her personal social media account roughly two weeks ago, shortly after news of the allegations against Busfield first emerged. The statement shared through Modern Prairie marks her first public acknowledgment since the situation became public.
According to court records, Busfield surrendered to authorities on Jan. 13. He has been charged with two counts of criminal sexual contact with a minor and one count of child abuse. Officials confirmed he was released from custody in New Mexico on Jan. 20 and is currently awaiting trial. The charges remain allegations, and Busfield has not been convicted of any crime.
Gilbert, who rose to fame as Laura Ingalls on Little House on the Prairie and later became a prominent advocate for women’s issues and community building through Modern Prairie, has not addressed the legal details of the case in her statement. Instead, her message centered on emotional resilience, gratitude, and the importance of community support during an uncertain and painful time.
