Lady Gaga Opens Up About Past Struggles with Substances

Lady Gaga may be one of the biggest pop icons of our time, but behind the glitz and glamour, she’s had her share of struggles.

Since bursting onto the scene 16 years ago, the singer has continuously pushed boundaries, shocked audiences, and redefined what it means to be a pop star. But the pressure to maintain that fame took a toll, leading Gaga to lean on alcohol, cigarettes, and cannabis as a way to cope.

In a raw and revealing interview with The Sun, the 38-year-old artist opened up about her past substance use and how she’s finally left that chapter behind.

“I used to drink a lot and smoke a lot, and I was always looking for an out,” she admitted. “I used to call it the trap door. I used to be like, ‘I need an escape route.’ I stopped doing that. And I actually started feeling it — being present.”

For years, Gaga’s high-energy performances, eccentric fashion, and daring persona masked the internal battles she was facing. But now, she’s in a completely different place—one that she describes as “boring” in the best way possible.

“Sometimes I worry people will say I’m boring these days, but honestly, thank God I’m boring. Because I was living on the edge,” she said. “I don’t know what was going to happen to me living that way. So the fact that I have these answers… On the one hand, I’m like, ‘Oh man, snooze-fest!’ But, actually, I’m so grateful. Because I found a sense of happiness and joy that is true to me.”

A big part of her newfound peace? Her relationship with entrepreneur Michael Polansky, 46. The couple has been together for years, and Gaga seems to have found stability in their quiet life together.

Gone are the days of wild partying and self-medicating to deal with the pressures of fame. Now, Gaga is embracing a more grounded, balanced life—one that might not be as flashy but is definitely healthier.

Her candid reflections serve as a reminder that even the biggest stars aren’t immune to the pressures of fame. But for Gaga, the journey to happiness has been about stepping away from the chaos and embracing what truly matters.

And if that means being a little “boring”? She’s perfectly fine with that.
