At the age of 92, actor Derek Martin, well remembered for his role as Charlie Slater in EastEnders, passed away. In 2000, Martin and his four daughters, Lynne, Kat, Little Mo, and Zoe, made their debut as widower Slater in the BBC soap opera Albert Square.
He appeared in several significant storylines and was a regular cast member until 2011. After that, Martin made several cameos on the show before his character died of a heart attack in 2016.
Martin’s family called him a friend and father who “supported us through our highs and lows” and that they would “miss him terribly” in a statement released on Sunday by his agent, Sharon Henry.
According to the announcement, Martin, who was born in Bow, in London’s East End, passed away on Saturday. It said, “Derek was a genuinely genuine working-class voice in British television and cinema for more than 50 years.”

His agency, meanwhile, claimed he had “cherished his time portraying Charlie Slater” and that it was “a privilege to be a part of his creative journey.”Henry continued, “Derek was a loving father, a kind member of the nonprofit Water Rats, a passionate golfer, and an all-around decent man who will be sorely missed.”
Martin, who had previously worked as a butcher at Smithfield Market in the City of London and in factories, started acting in the 1960s. Before being cast as Charlie Slater, he appeared in shows including Doctor Who, Z-Cars, The Sweeney, Eldorado, Law & Order, and Hart to Hart despite having no formal training.
The staff of EastEnders was “deeply saddened” to learn of Martin’s passing, according to a representative. “From the moment he arrived, Derek’s portrayal of Charlie Slater instantly cemented him in the hearts of the audience, as the head of one of EastEnders’ most iconic families,” they continued.
Derek would go to any lengths for his loved ones, just as Charlie would do anything for his family. Derek will always be remembered with tremendous affection and was adored by everyone who worked with him at EastEnders. His family and friends have our love and best wishes.
