For more than twenty years, the actor claims to have been using the same topical ointment.
Matthew McConaughey is relieved to have a full head of hair again after nearly losing it all more than two decades ago — but he’s not happy that others are claiming credit for it.
McConaughey, 52, describes buzzing off all of his hair after experiencing substantial hair loss in the 1990s in his memoir Greenlights.
“You can go back and look at things like The Wedding Planner and those things; I mean, you’ll see, I was losing,” the Magic Mike star recalled in a recent interview with LADBible.
“I got a picture: Turn of the millennium party in 2000 in Jamaica, I was looking down laughing, and there was a baseball-sized bald spot on the top of my head,” he added.
After shaving his head, McConaughey began applying a topical ointment into his scalp “once a day for 10 minutes” in an attempt to regrow his hair. (On Live with Ryan and Kelly a few years ago, he revealed the ointment was Regenix.)
“I was fully committed to it,” he told LADBible. “No Propecia, no nothing. It was just manual labor.”
As per People, but, as thrilled as he is with the results, McConaughey is just as surprised as anyone that he suddenly has such luscious locks.
“All I can tell you is it came back,” he said. “I have more hair now than I had in 1999.”
Others have tried to take credit for his surprisingly full head of hair, he told the publication. McConaughey claimed he learned from a Beverly Hills doctor that a doctor claimed to have given McConaughey hair plugs that accounted for his thicker mane at an international hair transplant conference.
“[The Beverly Hills doctor] goes, ‘Can I just look at your hair? Can I just feel it and see?’ ” he recalled. “I said, ‘Yeah man,’ and he goes ‘You don’t have transplants!’ I said, ‘That’s what I said, of course, I don’t.’ “
“I can’t wait to bust this guy’s nut next year when he raises his hand,” the doctor remarked, according to McConaughey.
“He’s busted, man!” McConaughey said of the surgeon.
